The trail.

Roy’s Peak is a mountain between Glendhu Bay and Wanaka, which has a hiking trail that goes up to the 1,578m summit and has breathtaking views over Lake Wānaka, Mount Aspiring and other surrounding peaks.

This steep 16km return hike will take you around 5 - 6 hours to complete, depending on your speed. Make sure to take plenty of water, sunscreen and some extra layers of clothes, as there is no shade to hide in on the way up and there can be a very cold wind at the summit.

For me, this was one of the hardest hikes I’ve done during my time in New Zealand (possibly because it was one of the first), but the incredible views up top were totally worth the sometimes monotonous hike and I would do it again in a heartbeat. I vividly remember standing at the summit with my friends and having to pinch ourselves to make sure we weren’t dreaming. The view was unreal, and I mean that in the most literal way possible.
